Abstract

Various origins and reasons of formation have imposed complexity and difficulties on improvement plans and as well as rehabilitation and renovation of worn-out tissues. Therefore, designing rehabilitation, retrofitting, and repairing methods of old constructions needs a deep understanding of the above-mentioned factors as well as approaches. Due to the importance of schools, in this research, the seismic vulnerability of these types of the building has been studied in Iranshahr. Investigations revealed 80% of schools are made from semi reinforced and unreinforced building materials in this city. Because of compatibility as well as appropriateness, the Arya method has been chosen to assess the seismic vulnerability of buildings of schools. Based on the damage index, through field surveying and collected data it can be observed that, for masonry schools, during an earthquake with an intensity of MSK9 and MSK8, 90 and 51% of schools will collapse, respectively. Moreover, an earthquake with an intensity of MSK7 will cause moderate damage in 81% of schools in which extensive repair is required. However, investigation of gathered information shows that nearly 80% of studied schools are located in a crowded area, as well as, locations of 84% of these buildings are convinced to access and in case of proper rehabilitation can be used as relief bases after the earthquakes
